Starting this week is the 1st Bayelsa State Board Games National Championships in which chess, scrabble and draughts are the games featured. The games will be taken place in the prestigious Glory Land Cultural Center located in Yenagoa - the capital city of Bayelsa State of Nigeria. The chess event is sponsored by Galaxy Group Ltd. Galaxy Group Ltd is one of Nigeria's foremost companies in the electrical, civil and dredging industries.

Background of Board Games in Bayelsa State, Nigeria

The activities of organised board games in Bayelsa State has been relatively low. Board game activities have primarily evolved around the state Associations in Sports Councils and few other playing spots in Yenagoa. Hitherto it has been the State Associations and the Achievers Organisation that have attempted tournaments at the state level.

It is heart warming to note that through the through the efforts of Hon. (Engr.) Emmanuel Frank Opigo, Honourable Commissioner of Works & Transport and the Commissioner of Sports, Hon. Elder Bethel Amabebe, this National Championship has come to fruition today.

The story cannot be completed without mentioning the great enthusiasm shown by the sponsors of this maiden edition - Seabay Development Co., Galaxy Group Limited and Macom Engineering Ltd. These companies willingly offered to sponsor Chess, Scrabble and Draughts respectively on a national scale.

In concretizing this noble venture, other sponsors have indicated interest in promoting other board game events in subsequent editions. What more? The Board game revolution is on. Only time will tell.
